120 Years of Scholarship, Leadership, & Service

Mortar Board, a national honor society, recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership, and public service. The organization includes 228 chapters as well as 50 alumni chapters, and since its founding in 1918 has initiated nearly a quarter of a million college seniors. Among Mortar Board’s many distinguishing achievements is the fact that it was the first honor society for women. Although Mortar Board became a co-ed honor society in the 1970s, these unique roots still resound in the current traditions and values that we seek to uphold.

One of the four founding chapters of the Mortar Board national organization, the Cornell University chapter, Der Hexenkreis, has offered its members a unique opportunity to be among some of Cornell’s most influential student leaders from many outstanding groups on campus. Since its inception in 1892, Der Hexenkreis provides ample opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to both the Cornell and Ithaca communities, and recognizes the value of scholarship and academic excellence.
